Varicose vein problems, and spider veins, can happen as men get older. Food, fitnes and heredity all help determine theappearance of varicose veins. These vessels are weakened and often bigger and bruised looking. They appear as tangled and enlarged, red veins on the surface of the lower extremeties.

A varicosevein doctor that is certified is referred to as a phlebologist. There a number of separate treatments to cure varicose vein conditions. Many more options exist at present than did in the recent past. Varicose vein treatment for small problems may be as simple as lifestyle changes. But more complex situations need intervention. Enlarged vessels must be sealed, disintegrated or removed. Other vessels easily replace the work of channeling blood to the heart. In all but the most difficult conditionsthe treatments to accomplish this are only minimally invasive.

Sclerotherapy is the term for treatment that closes off the walls of a weakened vein stopping blood flow. The vessel then turns to scar tissue. This is accomplished by injecting a compound into the varicose vein. This procedure is simple, and is usually done in a phlebologist`s clinic. This does not require putting the patient to sleep, and the men can resume regular activity immediately. There may be black and blue marks, discoloration or small fine lines which fade after a while, but no long term scarring.

New technologies for treating varicose veins include laser procedure. Lasers deliver a strong ray of light to the area, burning away spider veins. Individual procedures usually take under a half hour, but more than one procedures may be required in the following weeks. The temperature increase caused by the laser causes some pain, but a lot of people like this better than needles. Some inflammation and discoloration may occur following treatment, but will fade. When done by a competent doctor there should be no scarring. Again, there is no interruption to normal activities.

More compicated vessel difficulties may also be removed with lasers, or using both lasers and radiofrequency waves. In these cases, a tiny tube is put into into the vessel. The damaged vessel is then hit with light and radio energy which causes it to close up or even disintegrate. This kind of procedure can create black and blue marks, but leaves no longterm scars. This is also done in a clinic, and requires about a half hour. Regular actions may be continued the next day.

Phlebectomy is the stripping of varicose vessels by stripping them out through small incisions. While this seems serious, as in other cases, only about one day of rest is required.

Surgery is still required for enlarged damaged vessels, which requires varicose vein removal. For this procedure general anaesthesia may be required. Related to the severity, this could also be done in an office or inpatient surgery. Surgery can cause hurt and may need 14 weeks for recovery. Short scars from the incisions can remain, and nerve damage sometimes occurs.
